January 2026 Update

MHS

Greetings

Welcome back from what we hope was a fantastic Holiday Break. We are looking forward to our first week back at school! We have missed our hallways buzzing with excitement as students and staff return from a restful holiday break and New Year's celebration!

We have hit the ground running after our amazing PD session on Friday, January 2, and are excited about what the new year will bring, finishing the first semester strong and starting the new semester off successfully!

As we embark on the switching of semesters, please make sure to check in with your child's teachers and school counselor if you have any questions or concerns. As you will read below, the first semester officially ends on Friday, January 16. The second semester will begin on Tuesday, January 20.

We have lots of great activities underway already and more starting throughout the month. We cannot wait to see our students participating in all that is taking place! As always, we will be sure to update you if we have additional information to share with you.

We thank you for your continued partnership and support and are looking forward to what amazing opportunities 2026 will bring to our school community!

Regards,

Chris Lowe

Student Spotlight

WCSA Recipient McKenzie Settle

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 Worcester County Superintendent's Award Recipient - McKenzie Settle

Millbury Junior–Senior High School is proud to recognize McKenzie Settle as a recipient of the Worcester County Superintendent Association Award. McKenzie exemplifies what it means to be a well-rounded, student-centered leader -balancing academic excellence, service, and a deep commitment to making her school community more inclusive and welcoming.

Academically, McKenzie has distinguished herself through both achievement and voice. McKenzie earned the English Department Award in her junior year and the History Department Award as a sophomore, reflecting her strengths as a thoughtful reader, writer, and critical thinker. In 2023, McKenzie further showcased her confidence and communication skills by winning the Millbury Lions Club Speech Competition and advancing to the semifinals.

Beyond the classroom, McKenzie’s leadership and service have left a lasting impact. McKenzie is on track to earn the Girl Scouts Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts, while also mentoring younger Girl Scouts and musicians. As Drum Major for the Marching Band in both her junior and senior years, McKenzie led her peers with dedication and pride. McKenzie also serves as Treasurer of the National Honor Society and is a passionate leader of Millbury’s Gender Sexuality Alliance, where McKenzie has advocated for a safer, more welcoming school environment for all students.

McKenzie’s values are captured in a favorite quote by Lin-Manuel Miranda:
“And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside.”

We congratulate McKenzie Settle on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for the leadership, compassion, and voice she brings to the Millbury community.

Thanksgiving Day Honorary Captain - Xavier Lopez

We were proud to recognize Xavier Lopez as an Honorary Captain at our annual Thanksgiving Day football game against Oxford. Xavier, a beloved sophomore at MHS, embodies school spirit, joy, and connection. He is an active member of our Unified Sports teams, participating in both basketball and track. He is a familiar and enthusiastic presence, cheering on his friends who proudly wear the Woolie uniform.

This meaningful recognition was entirely student-led, sparked by Xavier’s genuine passion for the football program and the strong relationships he has built within our school community. A special thank you to our students for making this unforgettable opportunity possible, and congratulations to “X-Man” on being named an Honorary Captain. It was truly an amazing day that reflected the best of who we are as a school community - better together. 💛🏈

Toys for Tots

Class of 2026 Donates $600 to our annual Toys for Tots Drive

We wanted to share a photo of our officers with the toys they purchased using the money raised at the annual reverse trick-or-treating event. With $600, they purchased roughly 60 toys, primarily for older kiddos

Our officers had a lot of fun shopping over the last few days!

Thank you to our Senior Class Officers - Dylan Curran, Matteus Mateo, Norah Haig, and Nahya Bichotte
