October 2025 Update

MHS

Greetings

Greetings, Woolie Families!

As September comes to a close, I can say with certainty that it was a fast-paced month that has set the tone and tenor for the rest of the school year. Having had the fortune of getting into classrooms over the past month, it is clear and evident that our focus on relationship building has been a priority. The rapport between students and teachers has been on display and has helped to foster deeper levels of engagement, interaction, and collaboration within the classroom. As a school, we will continue to promote prioritizing relationship building within our school and classrooms on a day-to-day basis.

October looks to be a busy month, so please look at the key points below to familiarize yourselves with all that is going on. There will be several additional communications throughout the month that will serve as reminders to all that is taking place.

Sincerely,

Chris Lowe

Tri-M Induction

2025 Tri-M Inductees

Millbury Junior-Senior High School proudly hosted its first annual Tri-M Music Honor Society induction ceremony, celebrating the talents, dedication, and leadership of our student musicians. Surrounded by family, friends, and peers, our inductees were formally recognized for their commitment to musical excellence and for the positive impact they bring to our school community. The event marked an important milestone as we established a tradition that highlights the role of music in shaping well-rounded, engaged students. As part of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Tri-M highlights the vital role of music in education and connects our students to a nationwide tradition of leadership, service, and artistry.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who joined us in honoring our students on this special evening. A special thank you goes to Ms. Anneliese Hammer and Mr. Jesse Dooley for their outstanding efforts in coordinating the ceremony and supporting our students throughout this process. Their dedication ensured that this inaugural induction was both meaningful and memorable, setting the stage for many successful Tri-M celebrations to come.

This year's inductees were:

We are officially a National Banner School!

Special Olympics for Achievements with Inclusion

Millbury, MA, September 12, 2025 – Special Olympics Massachusetts has announced that Millbury Memorial Junior-Senior High School, a school with Special Olympics Unified Champion School® programming, is receiving national banner recognition for its efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without intellectual disabilities. MJSHS is receiving this distinguished status as a result of meeting 10 national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy, and respect. A national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community developed these standards.

The primary activities within these standards include sports, leadership, and whole-school engagement opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities. The result is a school environment that promotes inclusion and respect for all. National banner schools should also demonstrate they are self-sustainable or have a plan in place to sustain these activities into the future.

The Unified Champion Schools® model is a strategy for schools Pre-K through university that intentionally promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to create accepting school environments, utilizing three interconnected components: Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole school engagement. More than 21 million inclusive experiences are taking place through Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® programming.

The Unified Champion Schools® model is supported by the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education. This model has been proven, through research, to be an effective and replicable means to provide students with and without disabilities the opportunity to form positive social relationships and promote a socially inclusive school climate.

A helpful update from UPENN:

It's that time of year! As students begin preparing their applications, we wanted to remind you of some helpful suggestions!

Here's What's New
This year, all first-year and transfer applicants to Penn will be asked to submit the following letters:
  • One letter from a school counselor
  • Two letters from a teacher in a core subject area
We recommend letters come from those who know the student well and have worked with them recently (ideally junior or senior year).
What We Look for in Letters
The strongest recommendations help us understand a student beyond what we see elsewhere in the application. Specifically, we appreciate letters that highlight:

  • How a student engages with classmates, educators, and their learning environment
  • Any family or personal circumstances they've been navigating
  • Specific examples of a student's involvement, impact, and personal qualities
  • Context about your school or community that shaped the student's experience
  • What kind of environment they thrive in, and what they might bring to our campus

Want to Help Students Get a Head Start?
Our Letters of Recommendation Worksheet helps students think through who might add helpful context to their application—and reminds them to give you and their teachers plenty of time to write.
